From the editor, Jane...

“Kakuro is a number-based puzzle that requires the use of simple addition. It might therefore sound a little disingenuous to argue that you don’t need to be good at maths in order to solve the puzzles, but this is indeed the case. You no more have to be a mathematician to solve Kakuro than you need to be a Professor of English in order to solve a crossword. In a Kakuro puzzle, the object is to complete the grid so that the digits placed in a block of cells add up to the total given for that block. Only the digits 1-9 are used and the same digit must not be repeated in a block.

After a while, you will know most of the unique digit answers off by heart. Solving Kakuro has altered my view of the world, at least as far as numbers are concerned. If I see a Number 23 bus, my first thought is 6, 8 and 9, as that is the only combination of unique digits that adds up to 23. Sometimes I wonder whether I should be bothered by the way my thinking goes when it sees numbers. Am I fanatical? About a puzzle? Oh, dear. I suppose it could be worse.

I must confess that I carry around a spare copy of Kakuro for emergencies. And not just because this magazine fits perfectly into my bag. While most people are superglued to their smartphones, I’ll be wielding a pencil, lost deep in thought. OK, I’ll admit it, more likely rubbing out a patch of numbers in the corner, where I’ve had a momentary lapse of concentration, and gone wrong. It’s at this point that I realise I need to switch to a different puzzle until my mind gets back on track again. As the old saying goes – a change is as good as a rest. And what’s really handy is that the Kakuro in the magazine are interspersed with a selection of other types of puzzle – Killer Sudoku, Loop the Loop, Suko, Navigrids and Suguru. Which reminds me of another adage: variety is the spice of life.

It’s one of those age-old questions that troubles us from time to time: does size really matter? When it comes to Kakuro, you’d think the answer was straightforward: size does matter. Large puzzles are, in general, more time-consuming than small puzzles. But does bigger mean better? Maybe not. I don’t know about you, but my mind is quite contrary. Sometimes it thrives on a challenge; at other times, it’s in search of light relief. Actually, I couldn’t possibly tell you what its position is in respect of size, but as far as Kakuro is concerned, it really isn’t bothered, because Kakuro is fun at all sizes! Isn’t it time you welcomed this fascinating puzzle into your world?”
