This is a skeleton fitword – in other words, a fitword in which you must deduce the pattern of the grid as you go along, locating the black squares as well as the answer words.
The puzzle has a conventional fitword list, with words listed by length and in alphabetical order. Usually, three words and three black squares have been put in the grid as starters. The puzzle is based on a fully symmetrical grid pattern, so the starters will usually reveal the location of several more black squares and answers.
Critical to the puzzle's success is the choice of starters. Too little information in the grid, and getting into the puzzle becomes an exercise in leaps in the dark.
