The art of this puzzle is to position the dots in such a way that the line-image cannot be identified until the dots have been joined. Background artwork is sometimes used to enhance the picture. Multi-line and multi-colour versions of this puzzle have been created in recent times. It is also theoretically possible to replace numbered dots with other reference points.
